Vintage Pro Audio Equipment

In the ever-changing world of audio and music, certain pieces become vintage over time. These pieces then become sought-after by collectors. It is important to know how to use and maintain the piece properly so it stays in working condition.

How should you clean pro audio equipment in your studio?

Using a wool or microfiber cloth, the piece should be dusted on a regular basis.Do this on all smooth surfaces. For front panels covered with knobs, use a soft-bristled paintbrush that is one to two inches in width. Use the brush to dust the front and rear panels of the piece. Alternatively, use a soft brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner to remove dust. In some cases, a cleaning solution may be needed, especially if the dust is ground in. This can be used on faceplates, chassis and dust covers. Use a cotton cloth to buff the surface clean. Avoid using anything with ammonia in it, as it can influence the finish.

What is an analog recorder?

An analog recorder is also known as a tape deck. The machine records sound on a cassette tape in analog format. The cassettes use a magnetic tape to polarize the domains in relation to the audio signal. Vintage pieces may include reel to reel analog recorders. Some different types of analog recorders include wax strip recorders, magnetic recorders, wire recorders, and early steel tape recorders.

What is an audio amplifier used for?

An audio amplifier is used to strengthen weak sounds. It improves the quality of the sound and helps balance the notes to ensure that the music is appealing in sound. The amplifier helps to make a music signal from a recording audible to distant listeners. Vintage amplifiers work by way of vacuum tubes. They produce a unique tone that cannot be duplicated with modern equipment. Because of this, there are many musicians who continue to use vintage amplifiers to play live with. This is especially true when trying to replicate the sounds from decades past. Old rock and roll, jazz, and even country artists may choose to enhance the nostalgia of a musical piece with a vintage amplifier.

When do old pieces become vintage?

In the music industry, something is usually considered vintage if it was in use for 35 years or more. Pieces do not have to be rare to be considered vintage. This is true for equipment like instruments, amplifiers, microphones, soundboards, and speakers.
